I was out back
Splitting wood
Just like every October
Mail train came by
Spitting out sparks
You could feel the heat on your shoulder

The season was dry
The slash piles were high
Swamps long drained and level
I wish you coulda heard the wind that day
It sounded like the work of the devil

Air smelled of smoke
Hills a red glow
You could see the flames at the trestle
But the log mills rolled on
All the men had jobs
The Timekeepers kept them on schedule

The season was dry
Our boys were all at war
Many things in this world do collide
We sang the Old Rugged Cross from the river that night

I made a lot of promises
when we first met
Most of them I meant
But to love you more when the times got hard

Wake up the children
House to house
The flames they were jumping
